The Challenge
The number of readers experiencing Halifax Magazine online doubled just weeks following launch of the new halifaxmag.com. Looking to build on this success, Halifax Magazine wanted to bring the best of the magazine to iPhone users with a simple-to-use, free-to-download app.
With the Halifax Magazine team already publishing a print version and regularly updating a content-rich website, our challenge was to create an iPhone app that would be almost effortless to administer.
The Solution
The iPhone app design continues halifaxmag.com’s focus on the magazine’s content, presenting a simple to navigate interface that emphasizes featured articles interspersed with in-app advertising.
Using WordPress in the back end, the Halifax Magazine iPhone app takes specially tagged articles from halifaxmag.comand uses them to instantly populate the app. This seamless integration makes updating the site and the iPhone app a one-step process.
The Result
The Halifax Magazine iPhone app (also compatible with the iPad) is the first iPhone magazine app to come out of Atlantic Canada, garnering hundreds of downloads within days of going live.
Further, the Ryerson Review of Journalism featured the Halifax Magazine iPhone app in a recent issue, applauding the magazine as a local publication that understands the importance of a strong online presence.
