The Challenge

Nova Scotia Business Inc. was founded in November 2001. Since then NSBI has helped to create thousands of new jobs and has targeted new business growth opportunities for companies already operating in Nova Scotia.

Over the past two decades there has been substantial change to the annual report as a corporate communications device. Our challenge was to evolve the NSBI annual report to serve broader communications objectives, giving it a lifespan beyond its use as financial reporting tool.

The Solution

The concept for the 2009/2010 report was the collaborative effort of Kula Partners, Nocturnal Design, and the team at NSBI. “What Comes Next” combines the delivery of financial reporting information with stories of Nova Scotia businesses who have collaborated with NSBI and are helping shape the province’s future.

The annual report’s design places strong emphasis on the entrepreneurs, change agents and visionaries working to build a better Nova Scotia, capturing the very personal nature of business in the province. High resolution black and white photography paired with audio recordings of compelling stories combine to create a unique and engaging tone.

The Result

Since we first started working with NSBI to evolve their annual report 5 years ago, they have been recognized with a variety of industry awards for leading the way towards a different kind of annual reporting. By viewing annual reports in a new way—by choosing to see it as a communications opportunity—NSBI has transformed the “traditional” annual report into a critical piece of stakeholder communications that extends from print to online.
